NGMHS STUDENTS
Empowering Students Through WIL & Volunteering at NGMHS
At North Gauteng Mental Health Society (NGMHS)
We believe in nurturing the next generation of professionals who are passionate about mental health and community care. One of our proudest achievements is seeing how students grow during their
Work Integrated Learning (WIL) and volunteering journeys with us.
Recently, a group of Social Work and Psychology students joined our organization for their WIL placement. At first, many of them expressed feeling nervous and unsure about working directly with individuals living with mental health conditions. However, through hands-on experience in our protective workshops, exposure to our special care centers, and ongoing mentorship from our dedicated caregivers, these students quickly built confidence and practical skills.
By the end of their placement, they were not only able to apply their classroom knowledge in real-life situations but also developed a deeper understanding of the Human side of mental health support — empathy, patience, and resilience. Several of them shared that their time at NGMHS helped shape their career paths, with some even continuing as long-term volunteers and advocates for mental health awareness in their communities.
This success reflects our commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for students while strengthening the support we provide to those we serve. At NGMHS, every student’s journey adds value to our mission and leaves a lasting impact on mental health care.

🌟 Success Story: Growth Through Our Protective Workshops
At North Gauteng Mental Health Society (NGMHS), our Protective Workshops are more than just training spaces – they are places of growth, dignity, and opportunity. These workshops are designed to empower individuals living with mental illness or disabilities by providing them with structured activities, practical skills, and a safe space to express themselves.
One inspiring story is that of a young woman who joined our workshop with very little confidence and a deep sense of fear about how the world viewed her. At first, she struggled to interact with others, often feeling isolated and unsure of her place in the community. But with the encouragement of our dedicated facilitators and the supportive environment of the workshop, she began to flourish.
Through learning skills such as crafting, teamwork, and community engagement, she not only developed practical abilities but also gained the courage to connect with others. Step by step, she transformed—her fear slowly replaced with confidence, and her silence turning into a voice of self-expression.
Today, she is an active participant in her community, contributing meaningfully and inspiring others with her journey. Her story is a reflection of what our Protective Workshops strive to achieve: giving beneficiaries the tools, guidance, and opportunities they need to live with confidence and independence.
At NGMHS, we celebrate these small victories every day, knowing that each milestone brings our beneficiaries closer to belonging, acceptance, and personal growth.✨

🌟 Success Story: The Heart of Care at NGMHS
At North Gauteng Mental Health Society (NGMHS), our Special Care Givers are the heartbeat of our mission. They play an extraordinary role in the lives of our beneficiaries – offering not only essential support but also compassion, dignity, and hope.
One remarkable story is that of our Special Care Givers who dedicate themselves daily to ensuring that each client feels valued and cared for. Their work goes far beyond assistance with daily routines; they provide emotional support, encouragement, and the patience needed to empower individuals living with mental health conditions.
Through their consistent care, our beneficiaries gain confidence and independence. For example, a client who once struggled with simple daily tasks is now able to participate in workshops and social activities, thanks to the guidance and encouragement of a caregiver. Both the client and the caregiver celebrate these small but meaningful milestones – showcasing the powerful bond they share.
The success of our Special Care Givers lies not only in the progress our clients make but also in the love and stability they bring into their lives. Their dedication transforms challenges into opportunities, making a lasting impact on both the individual and the broader community.
At NGMHS, we are proud to celebrate our Special Care Givers as true champions of mental health, whose unwavering commitment ensures that every client is cared for with respect, kindness, and humanity.

Success Story: From Hope to Graduation
At North Gauteng Mental Health Society (NGMHS), we believe that every individual deserves the opportunity to grow, thrive, and achieve their dreams—no matter the challenges they face. One of the most inspiring journeys we have witnessed is that of a young student who joined our organisation as a beneficiary.
When she first came to NGMHS, she was filled with determination but lacked the resources and support to pursue her dreams. Through our programs, she received not only guidance and mentorship but also the encouragement to believe in her potential. NGMHS provided her with a nurturing environment where she could learn, gain confidence, and access opportunities that shaped her future.
With resilience and the support of our community, she was able to further her studies in the field of Business Analysis. Step by step, she balanced her academic commitments while remaining part of the NGMHS family. Her journey was not always easy, but she persevered—and in time, she proudly graduated with a degree in Business Analysis.
Her story stands as a testament to the power of opportunity, care, and perseverance. Today, she is an inspiration to other students and beneficiaries, showing that with the right support, dreams can become reality. At NGMHS, we celebrate her achievement and remain committed to empowering many more success stories like hers.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – 2025
Celebrating Decades of Compassion and Impact: The 2024/2025 North Gauteng Mental Health Society Annual General Meeting
The North Gauteng Mental Health Society (NGMHS) proudly hosted its 2024/2025 Annual General Meeting on 5 September 2025 at Paniel Salem Baptist Church in East Lynne, Pretoria — a day that reflected not only on a year of service, but on decades of unwavering dedication to mental health and community well-being.
This gathering brought together our valued stakeholders, partners, caregivers, and community members under one roof — united by a shared vision of promoting dignity, inclusion, and hope for individuals living with mental health conditions and intellectual disabilities.
For over seven decades, since our founding in 1951, NGMHS has remained a pillar of support in the North Gauteng region. Affiliated with the South African Federation for Mental Health (SAFMH), our mission has always been clear: to enhance and maintain the mental health of those in our communities while empowering individuals to achieve their full potential and quality of life.
At this year’s AGM, we reflected on our journey of growth, the challenges we’ve overcome, and the countless lives that have been touched through our work. Our programs continue to expand — from Protective Workshops and Special Care Centres, to community awareness campaigns, counselling services, and skills development initiatives for persons living with mental illness and neurodivergence.
The event was not just a meeting; it was a celebration of people — the caregivers who dedicate their days to nurturing others, the families who stand strong beside their loved ones, and the partners who walk this path of compassion with us. Every story shared reminded us that mental health care is not only about treatment — it is about human connection, empathy, and empowerment.
Our gratitude extends to all who have supported the Society throughout the years — the Department of Social Development, our community partners, sponsors, and the individuals who continuously believe in the importance of our mission. Together, we continue to break stigma, raise awareness, and build inclusive spaces where every person can feel valued and supported.
As we move forward into another year of impact, NGMHS remains committed to expanding access to quality mental health care, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring that every voice is heard. The 2024/2025 AGM was a reminder that our story is one of perseverance, compassion, and community — a legacy we proudly carry into the future.
“We are not just an organisation; we are a family bound by purpose, care, and the belief that every mind matters.”
