Social Workers
NELLMAPHIUS B & C
Behind every act of healing, every smile restored, and every life rebuilt, there are heroes who walk quietly among us — our Social Workers at Nellmapius Office C of the NGMHS.
They are the bridge between struggle and hope, the guiding hands that hold our beneficiaries and families through their most vulnerable moments. Each day, these social workers step into their roles with one shared purpose — to bring dignity, understanding, and light into the lives of those living with mental illness and intellectual disabilities.
At Nellmapius Office C, the energy is always alive with purpose. Files turn into stories, stories turn into lives, and every life becomes a mission. Whether they’re assisting a family to access social services, conducting home visits to ensure a client’s well-being, or facilitating group sessions that spark healing and self-confidence, our social workers carry the heart of NGMHS in everything they do.
Soshanguve Block H
The Soshanguve Block H Social Work office was established in response to the urgent need for accessible social services in the communities of Block H, Block X, and its extension. The office plays a vital role in empowering individuals and families by providing comprehensive social work services aimed at promoting emotional, social, and mental well-being.
Our office offers a wide range of support services, including core services such as crisis intervention.
Mediation and Conflict Resolution, Family Presentation and Reunification Services. Parental Guidance and Parenting Skills Programmes and Counselling for Individuals, Couples & Families.
Each of these services represents the heart of what we do — healing relationships, rebuilding trust, and restoring hope. Our social workers have witnessed families torn apart by trauma find their way back to love. They’ve helped parents regain confidence in their ability to nurture, and guided individuals struggling with emotional distress toward inner peace and resilience.
TSWELELOPELE SPECIAL CARE CENTER
Tswelelopele is deeply grateful to the Department of Education for providing essential training and educational programs that have uplifted the skill levels of our caregivers. We also thank the Department of Health for their financial support. This has allowed us to sustain our programs throughout the year. These partnerships have empowered parents with new knowledge and resources, enabling them to better care for their children and advocate for their needs.
Looking forward, our focus is on expanding our outreach that more families become aware of and benefit from our services. We plan to incferase visibility by engaging with local hospitals, clinics, and community radio stations. Additionally, we aim to strengthen collaborations with other organisations to extend our impact. Our goal is to meet and exceed our monthly targets, improve our marketing strategies, and continue building a well-founded, compassionate community where individuals with intellectual disabilities are supported and valued.

The Heart of Hope: The Story of NGMHS Ithutheng Community Development Centre
In the heart of our community stands a beacon of hope and transformation — the NGMHS Ithutheng Community Development Centre, a place where compassion meets purpose and where lives are rebuilt every day through care, empowerment and love.
The word Ithutheng means “Learn” or “Be Educated,” and that is exactly what this centre embodies — a space of growth, inclusion, and opportunity for people living with mental illness and intellectual disabilities. Established under the umbrella of the North Gauteng Mental Health Society (NGMHS), Ithutheng has become more than just a facility — it is a family, a safe haven, and a pillar of strength within South Africa’s mental health landscape.
Over the years, the Ithutheng Centre has accomplished remarkable milestones. Through our protective workshops, beneficiaries learn practical life and vocational skills — from sewing, beadwork, and gardening to baking and creative crafts. These activities do more than teach skills; they restore confidence, promote independence, and open doors to self-sustainability.
Our special caregivers and facilitators work tirelessly, offering not only guidance but genuine affection. They ensure that every individual is seen, valued, and supported according to their personal journey. Many of our beneficiaries, once isolated and discouraged, have now grown into active members of their communities — some even becoming mentors to new participants.
One of our greatest success stories is that of a young woman who joined the centre with little hope and fear of social rejection. Through the support of our caregivers and the structured activities at Ithutheng, she rediscovered her voice and her passion for art. Today, her handmade crafts are proudly displayed at local markets — a symbol of what happens when compassion meets opportunity.
Our success is not measured in numbers alone, but in the smiles we see every morning, the laughter in our workshops, and the courage of those who keep striving despite their challenges. We are proud to partner with the Department of Social Development and other community stakeholders who continue to believe in our mission — to promote mental health awareness, reduce stigma, and create inclusive spaces for all.
At NGMHS Ithutheng Community Development Centre, every day is a story of transformation. Every person who walks through our doors reminds us why we do what we do — to build a community where mental wellness is nurtured, and every individual can live with dignity, purpose, and joy.
As we look to the future, we remain committed to growing our impact, expanding our programmes, and continuing to celebrate the resilience of the human spirit. Ithutheng is not just a centre — it is a movement of healing, learning, and hope that continues to shape lives and strengthen communities across South Africa.

Refeng Sebaka Special Care Centre

A Sanctuary of Care and Courage: The Story of NGMHS Refeng Sebaka Special Care Centre
In the quiet rhythm of each day at Refeng Sebaka Special Care Centre, one can hear the sounds of love, laughter, and healing echo through the halls. Here, within the heart of the North Gauteng Mental Health Society (NGMHS), lies a sanctuary devoted to those who need the gentlest touch, the deepest patience, and the most powerful gift of all – care.
Refeng Sebaka, meaning “Be Patient With Us,” truly lives up to its name. It is more than a centre — it is a home for individuals living with mental illness and intellectual disabilities, a place where they are embraced, understood, and given the opportunity to live with dignity and joy. Every day, our team of dedicated caregivers, nurses, and support workers pour their hearts into creating a safe, loving environment that nurtures both body and spirit.
Through the years, Refeng Sebaka has accomplished extraordinary milestones. Our programmes are designed to provide specialized care, therapy, and skill-building opportunities that meet each beneficiary’s unique needs. From daily therapeutic routines and life skills training to creative arts and gentle recreational activities, we celebrate progress in every form — a smile, a word, a step, a moment of trust.
One of our most inspiring stories is that of a young man who came to Refeng Sebaka withdrawn and unable to communicate. Through the patience and love of our caregivers, he slowly began to engage in daily activities, expressing himself through music and movement. Today, he greets visitors with confidence and joy — a living symbol of what compassion and consistency can achieve.
The staff at Refeng Sebaka are the true heroes of our story. Their dedication goes beyond duty — they bring warmth, laughter, and creativity into every corner of our centre. They celebrate birthdays, share stories, sing songs, and hold hands through difficult days. Their work reminds us that healing begins with human connection, and that even the smallest gestures of care can transform a life forever.
With the continued support of the Department of Social Development and the broader NGMHS family, Refeng Sebaka continues to grow as a centre of excellence in mental health care and community inclusion. We are proud to see our beneficiaries blossom — learning, engaging, and finding confidence in their own abilities.
Each success story at Refeng Sebaka is a testament to the power of hope. It tells us that when we invest in care, we build a future where no one is left behind — where mental health is not hidden in silence but embraced with understanding and love.
At NGMHS Refeng Sebaka Special Care Centre, every day is a celebration of resilience, kindness, and the beauty of the human spirit. Together, we continue to write new chapters of courage — one heart at a time.
